A cabinet of hammered silver, a thousand years deep.
In Alderley Edge we bought a cabinet of more than fifty hammered silver coins. It ran from Anglo-Saxon silver pennies through the medieval reigns to hammered crowns of Charles I. Every coin had been struck by hand, centuries before machinery, and no two were alike.
A cabinet like that cannot be valued by weight or by the tray. Each coin is judged on its own: how well it was struck, how much of the legend can be read, whether the flan is full and round, and how it has toned. We went through it piece by piece with the owner and explained what we saw.
If you have early coins, please do not clean them. The dark, even tone on old silver is exactly what collectors look for, and removing it can halve a coin’s value in an afternoon.

Questions
What people in Alderley Edge ask us.
How do I know whether a coin is hammered?
Hammered coins are slightly irregular: not perfectly round, often a little uneven in thickness, with a design that may sit off-centre. Send a photograph of each side and we will tell you.
Should I clean old coins before showing them to you?
No, please leave them exactly as they are. Cleaning removes the surface collectors pay for.
Do old envelopes and tickets with the coins matter?
Yes. They can show where a coin came from and who owned it, which adds to both its interest and its value. Keep them with the coins.
Is there any charge for the visit?
None. The valuation is free and there is no obligation to sell.
